He was one of the world’s premier superheavyweight weightlifters and when the 1998 European Weightlifting Championships came to Riesa, Germany Ronny Weller gave his fans a lesson in the sport as he uncorked a 205.5 kg (world record) snatch, along with a 260-kg clean and jerk (world record total).
He’d already gone five-for-five, broken a world record and pocketed all three gold medals in the +105 kg category at the 1998 European Weightlifting Championships, but when he called for this 260-kg in the clean and jerk—and made the lift—Ronny Weller brought down the house as he also broke the world record in the total.
