The Stirling Highland Games in Scotland celebrated its 2010 Silver Jubilee Games at a new venue at North Kersebonny on the outskirts of Stirling.  These Games are run by the Stirling Tourism Association and were sponsored by Sekonda Watches, who stepped in to save the Games from cancellation due to lack of sponsorship.

With strong winds near gale force at times and accompanied by rain showers and sunshine, a crowd of 3,000 spectators watched as some of Europe’s best went at it with the heavy implements.  It was good to see Craig Sinclair back after a severe rib injury in the hammer that kept the big man out of competition for nearly a month.

In the opening event with the 16-lb. shot, the Polish Wenta brothers dominated by nearly two full meters over their Scottish rivals, with Lukas Wenta winning with a put of 55’ 10”.  In second place was Sebastian Wenta with a distance of 55’ 3” and in third, Gregor Edmunds was well under par with only 49’ 3”; in fourth place was Bruce Robb with 48’ 1”.

In the following event with the 22-lb. shot, L. Wenta easily notched up his second win with a put of 47’ 6”.  Brother S. Wenta took second with 46’ 3”, leaving third to Edmunds at 45’ 8” and fourth to Robb at 40’ 5”.

The 28-lb. weight for distance was indeed a very hard-fought battle between Edmunds and Sinclair, with Edmunds just pipping Sinclair for the win with a throw of 78’ 2” and Sinclair mere inches behind with 77’ 11” for second place.  S. Wenta took third place with 76’ 6” and Robb came in fourth with 71’ 2”.

In the 56-lb. weight for distance, Edmunds claimed first place with a throw of 38’ 3”, but hot on his heels were S. Wenta, who placed second with a distance of 36’ 8”, and Sinclair, who placed third with 36’ 7”.  Robb once again landed in fourth spot with 36’ 3”.

The 16-lb. hammer was won by Edmunds at 129’, with Sinclair in second place at 124’ 5” and S. Wenta in third place at 119’ 1”.  L. Wenta came in fourth place with 118’ 11”.

But in the 22-lb. hammer, Sinclair stormed the win over Edmunds with a throw of 106’ 7”, leaving Edmunds in second place at 104’ 5”.  S. Wenta followed in third place with 101’ 3” and L. Wenta, fourth place with 100’ 2”.

The caber event, with a 19’, 120-lb. implement, ended in a tie between Neil Elliot and L.Wenta, with both nailing 12:00 tosses.  S. Wenta and Edmunds were third equal with tosses of 12:02.

Overall points:

1. Gregor Edmunds 34.5
2. Sebastian Wenta 30.5
3. Lukas Wenta 27.5
4. Craig Sinclair 25.0
