Strength Through Resistance
"If a man is to know himself, he must be tested."—Seneca
You won't meet many people who live outside of padded cells who actually like difficulties. And yet, the Roman stoic makes a pretty good point. There is no other way to remove impurities than the refining fire. We learned this as little kids playing with the garden hose. You stuck your thumb over the end and proved that pressure creates power. The lesson was driven home when you grabbed your first barbell—strength comes only through resistance. When the heat gets turned up in your life remember, "The hotter the fire, the harder the steel."
Editor's Note: Steve Jeck’s books, Of Stones and Strength and The Stone Lifter; and videos, Kviahellan DVD, Jeck on Stonelifting video, and Classic Jeck: The First Works CD, define the world of stonelifting.
